What Are Heat Pumps and How Do They Work

Understanding Air Source Heat Pumps for lancing homes

An air source heat pump (ASHP) is an innovative and efficient heating solution that extracts heat from the outside air to heat your home. Even in cold temperatures, these systems capture and transfer heat energy from the air, making them a highly effective option for heating your home throughout the year. A heat pump can be between 300 and 500% efficient (when installed properly), meaning they can transform 1kw of Energy into up to 5kw of useable Heat, making them super Efficient!

How Do Air Source Heat Pumps Work?

Air source heat pumps operate based on a simple yet effective process:

  1. Heat Absorption: The outdoor unit of the ASHP contains a fan fan that drives air across an evaporator coil which contains a refrigerant.  This refrigerant absorbs latent heat from the outside air.
  2. Compression: The absorbed heat turns the refrigerant into a vapor, which then passes through a compressor. The compressor increases the temperature and pressure of the vapor, turning it into a high-temperature gas.
  3. Heat Transfer: This hot gas flows through a heat exchanger in the outdoor unit. This then transfers the heat gained from the hot gas into the water used within your central heating system.
  4. Recycling: The refrigerant then returns to a liquid state once the heat has been used and is sent back to the evaporator coil to begin the process again.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS grant) £7500

Revolution Heating makes it straightforward for Lancing homeowners to take full advantage of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which currently provides up to £7,500 towards the cost of a new high-efficiency air source heat pump. The Importance of System Design in Lancing Heat Pump Efficiency

At Revolution Heating, we understand that expert system design is essential for a successful heat pump installation in Lancing. A well-designed system ensures maximum efficiency, helping to reduce energy bills and avoid underperformance. Our team is committed to delivering long-term comfort and savings with every installation.

Important Lancing Heat Pump Installation System Design Steps

  1. Heat Loss Survey: A Heat loss survey is the first critical step to an efficient heat pump installation.
  2. Heat Pump Sizing: We then need to size the heat pump to match the Heat loss needed at design temperature.
  3. Pipe Sizing: Once we know how much energy is needed, we then make sure that the pipework is sized correctly.
  4. Pump Settings: The next step is to make sure that the system pump size and settings are correct.
  5. Emitter Sizing: The emitters will then need to be sized for the lower temperatures that Heat Pumps deliver.
  6. Control Strategy: Finally, the setup of the controls needs to be correct for the best efficiency.

By following these steps, Revolution Heating ensures your heat pump delivers the best possible performance and comfort for your Lancing home.
