What Are Heat Pumps and How Do They Work
Understanding Air Source Heat Pumps
An air source heat pump (ASHP) is an innovative and efficient heating solution that extracts heat from the outside air to heat your home. Even in cold temperatures, these systems capture and transfer heat energy from the air, making them a highly effective option for heating your home throughout the year. A heat pump can be between 300 and 500% efficient (when installed properly), meaning they can transform 1kw of Energy into up to 5kw of useable Heat, making them super Efficient!
How Do Air Source Heat Pumps Work?
Air source heat pumps operate based on a simple yet effective process:
- Heat Absorption: The outdoor unit of the ASHP contains a fan fan that drives air across an evaporator coil which contains a refrigerant. This refrigerant absorbs latent heat from the outside air.
- Compression: The absorbed heat turns the refrigerant into a vapor, which then passes through a compressor. The compressor increases the temperature and pressure of the vapor, turning it into a high-temperature gas.
- Heat Transfer: This hot gas flows through a heat exchanger in the outdoor unit. This then transfers the heat gained from the hot gas into the water used within your central heating system.
- Recycling: The refrigerant then returns to a liquid state once the heat has been used and is sent back to the evaporator coil to begin the process again.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS grant) £7500
With Revolution Heating, you can take advantage of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and receive up to £7,500 to offset the cost of installing a high-efficiency air source heat pump. This investment not only improves your home’s energy efficiency but also supports a greener, more sustainable environment.
The Importance of System Design in Heat Pump Efficiency
At Revolution Heating, we believe that expert system design is crucial for a highly efficient heat pump installation and is the main difference between a system performing badly, or obtaining those higher efficiencies. We are passionate about getting the best results from our systems, because a heat pump will highlight any problems quickly, with higher running costs and poor energy efficiency.
Important Heat Pump Installation System Design Steps
- Heat Loss Survey: A Heat loss survey is the first critical step to an efficient heat pump installation.
- Heat Pump Sizing: We then need to size the heat pump to match the Heat loss needed at design temperature.
- Pipe Sizing: Once we know how much energy is needed, we then make sure that the pipework is sized correctly.
- Pump Settings: The next step is to make sure that the system pump size and settings are correct.
- Emitter Sizing: The emitters will then need to be sized for the lower temperatures that Heat Pumps deliver.
- Control Strategy: Finally, the setup of the controls needs to be correct for the best efficiency.
By prioritising precise system design and controls strategies, Revolution Heating ensures superior efficiency and comfort. We feel that every system needs hands on, on-site system design steps to ensure getting the best possible result with a new Heat Pump Installation
